The Hunt Cycling is a full service bike-shop, independent journal and collective consisting of three cycling enthusiasts based in Halle Saale. We try to explore, document and share our experiences in the field of cycling and beyond. Besides drinking shandy, lots of riding and intellectual discusses about bike parts and stuff, we enjoy riding with friends and running our showroom and bike-shop located in the center of Halle.
The Pinarello Montello frame was the hallmark of the whole Pinarello line during the 1980s. Built with Columbus SLX tubing the Montello’s features are a interior derailleur cable construction, a front derailleur mount, shift lever bosses, a chain hanger, a chromed rear triangle, a chromed special plug-in cast aero sloping fork and a distinctive special Pinarello designed investment cast bridgeless bottom bracket shell. The frame is pantographed with several Pinarello „P’s“ and various decorative elements. The Montello colors were Nuovo Red, Blue Record, Spumoni, Silver/Fucsia and the very special Cromonero color. Also available as a complete bicycle with Nisi rims, 3T handlebar und stem, Vittoria tires and any Campagnolo or Shinmano group the Montello was the top product in Pinarello’s product line. It even was available up to a frame size of 65cm.
The special black glossy Cromonero finish was based on the Cromovelato painting technique which means clear-coating a completely chromed frame. However the Cromonero was painted with a colored clear-coat on chrome. Unfortunately there is no way to reproduce this technique nowadays because of the extremely toxic chemicals involved in this process.
Over the years a lot of world class riders have been ridden to victories on Pinarello bicycles. Fondriest, Battaglin, Van Impe, Delgado, Bertoglio and Grewal just to name a few. Alexi Grewal won the 1984 Summer Olympics Road Race on a Pinarello Montello. Till this day Pinarello bikes are highly sought after collectors’ items.
This rare Pinarello Montello Cromonero from 1989 was a very special project for us. Still it is one of our favorite The Hunt Cycling builds ever. Head over to the Pinarello Steel Collection to see more Pinarello bling bling.
It is autumn. One could think this year’s cycling season is finished. In spite of the weather becoming more and more uncomfortable we have a lot of visitors in the headquarter. Carlotta is one of them. She visits us quite regularly. Furthermore she’s completely fallen in love with a beautiful frame. No beauty at first sight but definitely a frame with a history. We are talking about a sunburst yellow, ultramarine blue-coloured Gianni Motta with smoothed out aluminum tig welds.
The über-yellow paint job is just amazing and reminds us of nothing else than pure summer bliss. Altough the color transitions are rough, the drop-outs are really massive, the welds are kind of unattractive and the Oria tube-set isn’t something special at all, yet this frame has something beautiful and a lot of potential for again becoming a classic road frame from the mid-nineties. Probably the seventyone-year-old Gianni Motta would love to see how twenty-year-old Gianni Motta frames still can make somebody happy.
Thank you Gianni Motta!
